Fire Resistance According to EN 16034:2014
EN 16034:2014 is the European standard that specifies the safety and performance requirements for fire-resistant and/or smoke control doors. This standard defines how fire doors should perform in fire conditions.
Fire Resistance Classifications
The standard uses the following main criteria to classify fire resistance:
- E - Integrity: The door's ability to prevent flames and hot gases from passing through
- I - Insulation: The door's ability to reduce heat transfer
- W - Radiation: The door's ability to limit thermal radiation
Time Classifications
Fire resistance is measured in minutes, with standard classifications of:
- 15 minutes
- 30 minutes
- 45 minutes
- 60 minutes
- 90 minutes
- 120 minutes
- 180 minutes
- 240 minutes
Classification Examples
Common classification combinations include:
- EI30: Integrity and Insulation for 30 minutes
- EI60: Integrity and Insulation for 60 minutes
- EW30: Integrity and Radiation control for 30 minutes
- E90: Integrity only for 90 minutes
Additional Performance Characteristics
Smoke Control (Sa/S200)
- Sa: Smoke leakage at ambient temperature
- S200: Smoke leakage at both ambient and 200°C
Self-Closing (C)
Classified from C0 to C5 based on:
- Number of test cycles
- Durability of self-closing
- Closing force requirements
Testing Requirements
Fire doors must undergo rigorous testing including:
- Fire resistance testing according to EN 1634-1
- Smoke control testing according to EN 1634-3
- Durability testing for self-closing according to EN 1191
- Initial type testing (ITT)
- Factory production control (FPC)
Documentation Requirements
Manufacturers must provide:
- Declaration of Performance (DoP)
- CE marking documentation
- Installation instructions
- Maintenance requirements
- Test reports and certificates
Maintenance and Inspection
To maintain compliance with EN 16034:2014:
- Regular inspections must be conducted
- All components must be maintained according to manufacturer specifications
- Any modifications must be documented
- Repairs must only use approved components
- Records must be kept of all maintenance activities
Important Note:
This standard works in conjunction with other European standards and building regulations. Always consult local building codes and regulations for specific requirements in your area.
